What is Legacies?

Since 2008, LEGACIES has been one of the most prominent Calgary Black History Month events. LEGACIES is a celebration of Black History and Canadian talent; it is a showcase of the rich and diverse art forms that have been influenced by the Black community, from traditional to the contemporary.

LEGACIES exists to fill a need; the need for an event that unites people from all races to come together and celebrate contributions that are often forgotten. LEGACIES is the most inclusive and diverse Calgary Black History Month celebration.

For non-Black Canadians, LEGACIES is a welcoming opportunity to experience the vibrant art, food and performance of a culture other than their own and allows them to leave with a higher level of understanding of Black Canadian history and contributions. There are many non-Black people affiliated with LEGACIES; from organizers and performers to supporters and attendees. LEGACIES is an all-inclusive Calgary Black History Month that provides access to art forms that some people may not otherwise be exposed to.

LEGACIES exists because Black History is Canadian History.

The "Shades of Black" Theme?

LEGACIES 2010: Shades of Black is a Calgary Black History Month celebration that recognizes the contributions to our nation by people of both African and Caribbean decent.

Black History isn't defined by one race, country, creed or culture. LEGACIES highlights the fact that Black History is just as much African and Caribbean as it is Canadian.

LEGACIES 2010: Shades of Black will include spoken word poets, gospel, blues and reggae musicians, African and Caribbean dancers, fashion designers, photography, art and food. There will also be an after party at the same location that will continue into the late hours of the night.

Who Is Collectively Eclectic?

Collectively Eclectic (CE) is a registered, Calgary based, non-profit organization that strives to create unique & inclusive cross-cultural experiences. By exposing local artistic talent, we hope to: entertain, educate and energize our communities.

The CE team is a collaboration of five executive members with extensive experience in event production, public relations and multimedia communications.

As an increasingly diverse nation, we as Canadians pride ourselves on being more of a 'mosaic' than a 'melting pot.' As such, both LEGACIES and Collectively Eclectic are a working collaboration of cultures and ethnicities, each weaving their own stories and customs into the diverse fabric of Canada.
